Now I have no specific qualms with Matt Damon as an actor he's fine I guess, and he didn't completely half-ass his performance as Spirit (though Titan A.E. However, there was one aspect of the film that consistently ruined my suspension of disbelief: Matt F*cking Damon. Overall, it's an excellent entry into Jeffrey Katzenberg's DreamWorks cinematic universe. The decision to not anthropomorphize the horses was risky but paid off wonderfully. My partner & I re-watched Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron last night, and I was reminded of why I loved it so much as a kid - a gripping story, good character design, and absolutely stunning visuals that combined hand-drawn animation with CGI set pieces.
